1984 5&6

"One of these days, thought Winston with sudden deep conviction, Syme will be vaporized. He is too intelligent. He sees too clearly and speaks too plainly. The Party does not like such people. One day he will disappear. It is written in his face." (53)

Syme is very loyal to The Party and to Newspeak. Winston thinks he'll be vaporized because he knows too much, even though he is very dedicated to Big Brother. This shows that The Party is not looking for people who are simply loyal, but for people who are blind. You can't be loyal and have a mind of your own. It threatens them.

Thread: v. To make ones way cautiously through

1984 4

"It struck him as curious that you could create dead men but not living ones." (47)

Winston is thinking about when people get vaporized. It's so simple to vaporize a person. One call and all of the records that the person ever lived is completely annihilated. To create a person is just as simple. Come up with a life and say that Big Brother says he exists, and he exists.

1984 2&3

"Asleep or awake, working or eating, indoors or out of doors, in the bath or in bed- no escape. Nothing was your own except the few cubic centimeters inside your skull." (27)

This is so important because even your thoughts aren't really your own with the thought police after you. These people aren't able to be private at all; not even in their heads. Some one is always watching them, waiting for them to give the slightest hint that they're even thinking about disloyal and it's off with their heads!
